“Social media has made international trade more accessible”: An interview with Tuck Shop Trading Co. founder Lyndsay Borschke.

What was your first export sale? How did that first opportunity arise?
Funny enough, (because it was a toque) our first export sale was to a retailer in Los Angeles. It was through a sales agency that we were working with at the time.

When it comes to exports, what do you know now that you wish you knew then?

I still have so much to learn. However, I would say having faith and trust in the people that handle the company’s logistics and brokerage functions was a big step. Without them our exports would be sitting in our warehouse.

How has the trading world changed since you started in business?
I feel that social media has made international trade more easily accessible. We find Instagram and Snapchat are great tools for finding potential retailers and partners. Showcasing your products on social media, especially with photos, helps.

What is the #1 thing new SMEs need to know about export and trade?
Be patient. Be persistent and learn as much as you can about Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) compliance. It will help you grow with the majors (EDI compliance is the ability to send and receive EDI documents in the way that your trading partner requires. Each document must be exchanged with each partner in exactly the format they specify and following all of their business data rules).
